The 40-year-old singer’s long-awaited seventh record Renaissance, set to be released Friday, includes a track called Energy which supposedly samples Kelis’ song Get Along With You from her 1999 debut album. But apparently, the 42-year-old had no idea the track was sampled on the album until it unexpectedly leaked online on Wednesday – and she was not too happy about it!

After a Kelis fan account on Instagram said that “@Beyonce’s RENAISSANCE album will include a @kelis sample on the song ‘Energy’” alongside a mind-blown emoji, she responded to the news in the comments section through her @bountyandfull page. And she did not hold back when calling out Beyoncé and The Neptunes‘ Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, who wrote and produced the song:

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance of all 3 parties involved is astounding . I heard about this the same way everyone else did . Nothing is ever as it seems , some of the people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have everyone fooled”

Kelis did not stop there! When another social media user commented that they “always felt like Beyoncé really admires Kelis,” the Milkshake artist responded:

“Admire is not the word.”

Another person also chimed in, saying “that’s a collab the world really needs,” Kelis fired back:

“It’s not a collab it’s theft.”

YEESH!!!

Kelis later took to her own Instagram to continue addressing everything in a video, claiming it was a “direct hit” from Pharrell for not reaching out to her about the sample:

“It’s not about me being mad about Beyonce … She’s one issue because it was stupid and disrespectful, and she should have at least reached out, but the real issue is people like Pharrell and Chad … I have the right to be frustrated.”

“I just heard the record everyone is saying has my sample . But it’s beyond this song at this point . This was a TRIGGER for me . Milkshake alone is one of the most licensed records of our generation. But there are bully’s and secrets and gangsters in this industry that smile and get away with it until someone says enough is enough . So I’m saying it today . I’m coming for what’s mine and I want reparations . Peace .”

Sooo it sounds like she might be coming after The Neptunes for this sample?!

It’s no secret that Kelis has had issues with The Neptunes when it comes to ownership over her past work. She previously told The Guardian in 2020 that she was supposed to split the profits from her first two albums with the producing duo – but that never happened. In fact, she claimed she never received any money from her first two albums! Due to being “blatantly lied to and tricked” when signing contracts, the performer said:

“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do. Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it.’ I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’”

Adam Levine is sticking up for Olivia Rodrigo as she continues to face plagiarism claims for her debut album Sour. In the months since her record-shattering album was released in May, the Disney Channel star has faced backlash for tracks sounding way too similar to hits by Taylor Swift, Paramore, and Elvis Costello. Not to mention Courtney Love called her out for “twinning” photoshoots.

Most recently, the 18-year-old added Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro to the writing credits of her single Good 4 U — after a mashup of the song mixed with Paramore’s Misery Business went viral for their similarities. Before that, the Cali native also added T-Swift and her writing partner to the credits of Deja Vu and 1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back.

Addressing these latest controversies, the Maroon 5 frontman hopped on his Instagram Story Friday to share his thoughts on the backlash. As a songwriter in his own right, Adam mused:

“There’s all this drama about Olivia Rodrigo. Look, these are tricky things, and anyone who’s ever written a song knows that sometimes you rip something off inadvertently, and it makes it to tape, and then it gets released, and then there’s a lawsuit.”

Not concerned about fairness at all, The Voice alum added:

“It’s a natural thing for it to happen, and sometimes it gets ugly, and sometimes it’s warranted that people take legal action. Sometimes it’s not warranted that people take legal action, and… the gray area has reared its ugly head these days.”

So what does he think about this particular “gray area”?? A lot.

The three-time Grammy winner cited a 2015 lawsuit that saw Marvin Gaye’s estate win a $7.3 million settlement against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke. A judge agreed that the duo’s widely popular hit Blurred Lines ripped off Gaye’s Got to Give It Up.

Not wanting to stir up too much drama, the singer decided not to give his opinion on that legal battle — which only makes us wonder what he thinks about it more, TBH. Must be a seriously controversial opinion if he’s holding back! But regardless, the 42-year-old didn’t bring up the case for nothing. He used the example as a way to plead for some more “compassion” in the music industry, continuing:

“Without giving an opinion on… how that one turned out, I do think that we [could] probably meet this with a little more compassion and understanding.”

If only that were so easy to come by in the entertainment industry! Especially when grown adults are confronting a teenager who’s brand new to the business! On all the “s**t” going on, Levine added:

“All this calling out and s**t, it’s like, music is a creative thing, and I just hate to see it crushed…”

Unlike many online trolls, the performer actually sees benefit in Olivia’s alleged plagiarism, suggesting:

“When you take someone who’s a newer artist, and she’s doing things that emulate the ones from generations removed, I don’t know how bad that is. I think it’s kind of a cool thing to introduce the whole generation of young people to different musical ideas… That’s just my opinion.”

Honestly, he’s got a point! But we know for sure some artists disagree with a burning passion, like Courtney Love. Earlier in the year, she slammed the High School Musical: The Musical: The Series lead for allegedly copying her cover artwork from a 1994 Hole album, sharing side-by-side photos of both the cover and photoshoot to the ‘gram and demanding an explanation.

The actress responded to the criticism with nothing but love for the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band, eventually telling GQ:

“To be honest, I’m just flattered that Courtney Love knows that I exist.”

LOLz! That’s definitely NOT the reaction Love was hoping for. The 57-year-old was coming full-force at the Gen Z pop star and all she got was a compliment… Not even those flowers she oddly requested!

On the “aggressive” nature of lawsuits and fighting for ownership over creative ideas, Adam concluded his IG post by reflecting:

“I just hate to see it become this huge thing where people get really aggressive about it. I don’t know — maybe I’m just not as territorial about that kind of stuff. I’m almost flattered when people rip me off. But I’m sure I’ve ripped people off too… It’s music. It’s a beautiful thing.”

One famous superstar seems to agree that music shouldn’t be taken too seriously. Costello, whose guitar riff from his 1978 song Pump It Up has been compared to the angsty opening of Brutal, couldn’t care less about the alleged plagiarism. In June, he tweeted:

“This is fine by me. It’s how rock and roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did.”

Such a good way to put it! And seriously, would anybody even care about Sour if not for Olivia’s ability to turn her inspiration into a “brand new toy”?But then again, we know this is all a business and greed takes over — so, it’s no wonder Liv’s faced such controversy.

Pharrell Williams is in mourning right now after his cousin was killed over the weekend in an apparent police-involved shooting in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

The talented musician and music producer announced the tragic death of Donovon Lynch in an Instagram post on Monday. Along with sharing a picture of Donovon smiling while sitting on a park bench in a throwback Arizona Diamondbacks jersey, Williams wrote (below):

“The loss of these lives is a tragedy beyond measure. My cousin Donovon was killed during the shootings. He was a bright light and someone who always showed up for others. It is critical my family and the other victims’ families get the transparency, honesty and justice they deserve. Virginia Beach is the epitome of hope and tenacity and, as a community, we will get through this and come out even stronger.”

Just awful…

Lynch was one of two people fatally shot during a string of apparently-unrelated shootings that rocked Virginia Beach on Friday night. The other person killed in the series of shootings was 28-year-old Bad Girls Club star Deshayla Harris. At least eight other people were also injured from gunfire on Friday night in the coastal Virginia city.

Lynch’s death was especially notable, though, because it came at the hands of a police officer. According to local CBS affiliate WTVR, the city’s police department claims a cop saw Lynch carrying a gun in the moments before he was shot. Police Chief Paul Neudigate later told the news station that a gun was found “in the vicinity” after the shooting. Whatever that means…

The death comes with significant community outrage, especially since the police officer’s body camera was not activated at the time of the shooting, so it’s impossible to know what happened, and what actually led to Lynch’s death. Local activists have already openly demanded police accountability and transparency in the wake of the incident.

Even Chief Neudigate, who has already placed the officer involved on administrative leave, addressed the fact that the body camera was not turned on during the incident, saying (below):

“We would like to provide the community answers. At this point we do not have them.”

No kidding. This whole this is so, so sad. Sending all our love to Pharrell and his entire extended family as they try to cope with this unimaginable tragedy. Rest In Peace…

The music mogul and longtime A-list celeb celebrated his half-century birthday on Saturday night inside his $40 million home in Holmby Hills, California, and it sure seemed like a good time was had by all! And believe us… when we say “all,” we mean pretty much every celeb you could ever imagine!

WOW!!!

That alone would make for a spectacular night, but a couple other things went down during the evening that would further make it all particularly special! For one, according to the outlet, JAY-Z and Yeezy mixed it up while they were both there, shaking heads and enjoying a laugh together — so it’s clear that whatever beef may have previously been between ’em is gone now, maybe? Nice!!!

Now that’s how you celebrate turning 50!!!

There were performers there especially to celebrate the birthday boy, too! Mary J. Blige, Usher, Lil Kim, and Doug E. Fresh all did their thing on stage at various points throughout the night, making it an even more memorable time for Diddy and the entire gang.

Oh, and what about the food, you ask? Got that covered! McDonald’s apple pies were everywhere, along with breakfast sandwiches, finger foods, and, oh yeah, some “fancy stuff,” as well. Plus, there was quite a bit of alcohol to go around — Ciroc Vodka was the drink of choice, of course. Gotta represent!

Plus, Diddy’s been through some remarkably tough times over the past twelve months — most notably struggling with the death of Kim Porter, the mother of his twins — so it’s understandable that he wanted to wait a little bit before he maybe felt like celebrating again.

Regardless, he’s back now, and it appears everybody in attendance had an amazing time!! BTW, the inscription on the birthday cake was short and sweet, and it summed the whole thing up: “LOVE.” Awww!
